3rd Generation Services or better known as 3G is a part of standards for wireless communications defined by the ‘International Telecommunication Union’. 3G services are step further to previous standard of mobile telephony, 2.75G or better known as EDGE services. 3G include basic services such as wireless voice telephone, video calls, and wireless data.

3G Services
Compared to old standards like 2G, 2.5G & 2.7G, 3G services allows simultaneous use of voice & data services which was not possible earlier. It allows higher data speed up to 14.5 Mbit/s on the down link and 5.6 Mbit/s on the up link. Thus, 3G network allows end users a wider range of advanced services such as video streaming, video calling & conferencing, online games at a broadband speed never before on mobile devices & 3G enabled USB modems.
In India, 3G services are launched by state run mobile operators while roll-out of 3G networks by private operators is delayed due to issues regarding additional spectrum, allocation & auction for it. Still in first phase, it is expected to be launched by end of this year & top four private telecom firms as a result of auction would be allowed to start 3G services in India. As happened with every competitive 3G market, India will see rapid growth in high speed wireless internet with effective costs.
