Recently Nokia announced its plans to launch N86 8MP in the US, with a price tag of US$558, which is much more than similar models from Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Nokia N86
The N86 carries an eight-megapixel camera, dual LED flash; Carl Zeiss optics, Tessar lens and a 2.6-inch AMOLED screen ( an emerging technology used in mobiles devices which is getting very popular), a Share Online client for sharing videos and images, through Ovi Share along with other such services, which enables users to share video and images with their contacts. You also get Ovi Maps, N-Gage and Ovi Files.
The N86 slider is a 3.5G device supporting W-CDMA/HSDPA, EGSM, and WLAN, uses the Symbian OS v9.3 operating system, has 8 GB of internal flash memory, up to 74 MB of internal dynamic memory and supports microSD cards of up to 16 GB capacity, along with a GPS receiver, which is quite common nowadays.
A Close-Up
The device supports MPEG-4; AVC; WMV; 3GPP; RealVideo and Flash video formats, capturing videos in MPEG-4 VGA (640 x 480 pixel) resolution at speeds of around 30 frames per second.
It has an F2 4/3.2/4.8 aperture with automatic control and a shutter with speeds of up to 1/1,000 second. Focal length is 4.61mm.
It has talk time of up to 3.9 hours for 3G networks and 6.3 hours on GMS networks, with standby time of 11.5 days on 3G networks and 13 days on GSM networks, Bluetooth 2.0, supports video calls of 2.5 hours, seven hours of video playback at QVGA resolution and 30 frames per second, 25 hours of offline music, and TV-out support for PAL and NTSC formats. It supports Bluetooth 2.0.
Camera Phone With a Capital ‘C’
Right now, the exact details of the launch is not known, with company spokesperson Anna Martin not being more specific.
The Nokia N86 8MP is up for stiff face competition from Samsung Memoir and Sony Ericsson C905. The 8-megapixel Samsung Memoir is being offered by T-Mobile since February, while the 8.1-megapixel Sony Ericsson C905a Cyber-shot camera phone, is being offered by AT&T last week.
Both carry features comparable to N86 8MP and are also much cheaper. The Memoir is offered at $199.99 with a two-year service agreement, and the Sony Ericsson C905a at $179.99 after an agreement and a rebate.
Say How Much?
The N86 may be sold without any carrier partners, and the company often sells phones sans carrier agreement. So, buyers will not get the discount that wireless companies often offer when buyers stick with their service for two years. So, buyer shall shell nearly thrice as much as for a competing device. Nokia emphasizes the device’s camera features. However, in the smartphone realm, the iPhone is the one to beat — and the iPhone 3GS only has a 3-megapixel camera. However, people are more concerned with the price, rather than Carl Zeiss technology, as pointed by Laura DiDio, principal at ITIC.
